Amazon’s SIPP (Ships In Product Packaging) certification is part of Amazon's stringent packaging requirements designed to ensure products are safely and efficiently shipped. These certifications verify that your product's packaging can withstand the rigors of the supply chain, minimize damage and improve shipping efficiency, without additional packaging or preparation by Amazon. As part of the Amazon APASS, our ISTA-certified lab provides the testing necessary to help you meet these critical standards.
ISTA-6A testing is the type of testing that your packaging needs to successfully endure to be certified as part of Amazon’s SIPP program. This type of testing verifies that your packaging meets Amazon’s strict performance standards for safe delivery without additional packaging or preparation in an Amazon facility. At Onyx Packaging, we help brands protect products, reduce damage, and maintain compliance. Our testing validates durability, efficiency, and sustainability so your packaging performs flawlessly throughout its eCommerce journey.
ISTA-6A is the foundation of Amazon’s SIPP and Over Box certifications, testing packaging to withstand real-world shipping conditions. By passing ISTA-6A, your products are certified to reduce waste, damage, and costs. We help you achieve certification faster while enhancing sustainability and customer satisfaction.
The ISTA-6 Type A Test Plan evaluates packaging strength and performance through a series of simulated shipping hazards—ensuring your products arrive safely and meet Amazon’s SIPP standards.
| Test Sequence | Description | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Atmospheric Preconditioning | Exposing packaged products to controlled temperature and humidity levels before formal testing begins | Ensures that package performance results are accurate, consistent, and reflective of specific shipping conditions |
| Vibration Testing | A simulation of the continuous oscillations, shaking, and mechanical disturbances that occur throughout the distribution cycle | To verify that a package can protect its contents throughout transportation and handling, despite continuous movement |
| Shock/Drop Testing | A simulation of sudden impacts, such as accidental drops, tumbles, or handling mishaps that may occur throughout a distribution network | To ensure the packaging system provides adequate protection against the abrupt impacts common in eCommerce fulfillment and parcel delivery |
| Leak Testing (if applicable) | An evaluation of a package’s ability to prevent liquid, gel, or semi-solid products from escaping under the stresses of shipping and handling | Helps identify weaknesses in packaging that could lead to customer dissatisfaction and high damage rates fo |
Unlike items that are part of the SIPP program, this type of eCommerce fulfillment involves placing an individual retail-packaged product into a master shipping container, either alone or with multiple retail-packaged products. Over Box Testing simulates real-world distribution challenges, ensuring the product's packaging provides adequate protection against damage.
When your product packaging meets the SIPP or Over Box certifications, it means your product is ready for Amazon’s streamlined shipping process. These certifications are an essential part of Amazon packaging testing, confirming that your product’s packaging protects it adequately during transit and that it is optimized for Amazon's fulfillment network.
By ensuring your packaging meets these standards, you reduce the risk of product damage, returns, additional packaging (with fees!) and customer dissatisfaction, while also contributing to sustainability by reducing excess packaging.
As an Amazon APASS partner, our ISTA-certified lab is equipped to perform comprehensive testing on your product's packaging to meet Amazon’s certification requirements.
Our team of transit testing experts will help guide you through the process of optimizing your packaging to ensure it complies with Amazon’s shipping standards, saving you time, effort, and potential costs due to rejections or damage during shipping.

Retesting is required whenever materials, case counts, dimensions, suppliers, or product formulas change. Keeping your certification aligned with your current product and packaging specifications helps prevent SIPP removal and reduces the risk of new packaging failures during fulfillment and transit.
Your packaging needs to be composed of 100% curbside recyclable materials per applicable laws in the region of sale, be easy to open and all content removable by the customer within 120 seconds with minimal use of scissors or box cutter, and it cannot contain blister packs, plastic inserts, packaging peanuts, shredded paper, or welded clam shells.
Amazon will consider physically similar products or ASIN variants for Form-Factor Certification if they meet certain size, weight, and composition criteria. Contact us to speak to a testing expert and find out if you’re able to enroll your products through Form-Factor Certification.
The lead time for ISTA testing is 2 weeks from when the product and payment are received. Onyx Packaging streamlines the testing process to delivery fast and reliable certification results to keep your products moving!
